Stone Age Columbus

The first half of the thread is almost entirely about early arrivals in America, and the programme summary you quote on 9 Nov 13:07 mentions dates, presumably related to Atlantic crossings, of 14,000-15,000 ya and 20,000-30,000 ya. It seemed relevant to mention a date of 38,000 ya which is most likely related to Pacific crossings. As a general point, it helps confirm that ancient people were as willing to get out and about in the world as moderns, and sea crossings held no insuperable terrors. Perhaps they hugged the coasts, though getting to and from Australia may have involved a bit more adventure.
Then FourWinds on 11 Nov at 13.01 speculated about the first settlers in North-Western Europe having come from America. PeterH then followed up with mention of "DNA stuff linking the Irish with Spain and Portugal", after which came "And the Moroccan Berbers" from FourWinds. It seemed relevant therefore to quote the DNA evidence linking Irish and Welsh Celts with Basques (plus extra evidence that the link seems to go back to the Ice Age and also to apply to all Britain).
I'd be interested to know of any firm genetic link with any Portuguese or Berbers.

Australia was reached by early man long before they reached Europe. With lower sea levels, the routes via Indonesia, Sumatra, Java and Borneo, New Guinea presented no difficulty as many of the island were hills on a low lying plain. Then it was just a short hop over to northern Australia.

Earliest dated human remains in Australia are 50-60,000 years ago when we were all suupposed to be still in Africa. A contoversial theory being argued now is that the first humans evolved in Asia and not Africa. The argument goes that we have only found African remains because of the dry climate and geology of places like the Olduvai Gorge. It is suggested that earlier remains either were never fossiled in Asia or were, but have not yet been found.

Gottcha - and yep, I'd also, "...be interested to know of any firm genetic link with any Portuguese or Berbers." (or linguistic link).
