If the boats shown in last night's prog are anything to go by Gordon you're probably right -

In Aku Aku, I'm sure that the natives said the "long ears" as one of the earlier peoples were known, sometimes had ginger beards. That is if my memory serves me correctly, it's a long time since I read that book.
