"the archaeological community continued to insist on proof of antiquity before moving to preserve sites"

Which of course can't be arrived at until they have done their job! Probably quoting slightly out of context because they are beginning to accept their antiquity, surely they should be respected for the culture of the "original" people of America. It would be interesting to know what type of protection or scheduling happens in America with historical or archaeological remains...

its early in the morning - "surely they" refers to the sites in question not the archaelogists...

"the archaeological community continued to insist on proof of antiquity before moving to preserve sites"

Now where does that sound familiar? Hmmm. There's a big pile of bones at a certain quarry site in North Yorkshire at the moment busy hugging a bulldozer. Not an archaeologist insite, but there's no proof they are old so its not a problem is it?
