Hi, SBP,

Dominic Winter in Swindon

http://www.dominic-winter.co.uk/

had one in their October 5th sale:

170 Phelps (Rev. William). The History and Antiquities of Somersetshire, parts 1-8 bound in four, [all pub.], 1st ed., 1836-39, fifty plates incl. six maps, a few tinted, fifty eng. vigns. to text, all correct as listed, orig. printed wrappers, subscribers' list printed to lower wrappers, 4to, contained together in slightly worn purpose-made book box, together with Smith (A.C.), Guide to the British and Roman Antiquities of the North Wiltshire Downs in a Hundred Square Miles Round Abury, 1st ed., pub. Marlborough College Natural History Society, 1884, map frontis., b & w plts. and illusts., initial pages loose, inner joints broken, orig. gilt dec. green cloth, rubbed, folio (2) £100-150 - £0 .

The first two figures are - I believe - the Saleroom estimate; the last means it did not sell. FWIW, it sounds like it verges on a a "breaker" - one to have the plates and maps out of, to be sold mounted..... I think this book is a nice item, and If I had the money, I'd certainly make Ishmael an offer (however, Whittle's book on Silbury "Sacred Mound, Holy Rings"gets first dibs - if I ever see one, that is!).

Peace

Pilgrim

Did the A C copy have the map section or was it missing pages or was it very tatty? Ho Hum ... you get what you pay for!

PSSSST ...... anyone got a Borlase for a fiver ?????

These antiquarian books are a better hit than getting wasted! It begs credulity that people so belittle these splendid volumes ...

I'll try to keep an eye out for it Pilgrim - got our copy from a 2nd hand book dealer in the US off Amazon.com....used to have the t-shirt too :-)
