David's Cairn

'Gale Force 10'.

I repaired part of the other one - which is in a bad shape - in 2000. There are no photographs of that part of the stonework. There is also worse to come - even more unbelievable stuff - but, to make maters worse, I have no photographs of it and can't get any till the end of May next year. The cairn hasn't collapsed because it is well filled with stones (it's quite tightly hearted) and the shape, going on for a catenary, is partially self-supporting. There is very similar stonework, in a comparable condition, a mile away but, the site is poorly located and is being overgrown with bracken.

I didn't think there was anything else like it !

They're a pair and when you see them nestled into the landscape, on the false crest of the hill known as Stouthard, that's the real test. The connection with the cupmark fossils is incredible and probably a bit too weird.

Juamei asked: "Why is it so 'clean'?"

StoneLifter told: 'Gale Force 10'.

Seems odd how the gale force 10's we get in the hills round here don't ever make 'em that neat, tidy and 100-year-old-looking.
