Good point. But don't the words 'unless otherwise stated' cover that eventuality?

The little yellow tag that pops up usually has name the person who made the image (even if it's 'Unknown' or 'Anonymous'), and more often than not with these old images, a (possibly) rough date, which would indicate that it's out of copyright.
