The carving you show runs in a clockwise direction, the sausage - anti-clockwise. I rest my case.

Not so fast, Mr Thornborough. As a matter of fact, all spiral carvings are anti-clockwise, consistent with the Mother Sausage.
The ones that appear clockwise were actually carved by L***rds, working from the inside.
