But what evidence is there that the ditches were for anything else? They're just there, a complete mystery.

Anyway, two pretty good speculations have been put forward for why there could be no evidence of a moat despite there being an intention for one.

This whole thread is 'drying up' and going to pot ;-) And who started the 'moat' debate off anyway? Wasn't me (I'm sticking to the livestock theory :-) On a serious note, the bank and ditch at Avebury really are a mystery and perhaps the key to understanding the purpose of the place.

Two main questions really -

1) Why was the ditch dug so deep?
2) Why heap the spoil from the ditch on the outside of the ditch?

Suggestions please.
