Having had my introduction to RA from reading Beceknsall books, I was later surprised to see that the nomenclature differs from region to region. There's still confusion sometimes about the difference between a motif and a symbol, a symbol and an element etc.

Is it the same with these earthen ring-works? A matter of people needing to classify for the purposes of organising information into databases (these new-fangled digital ones or old fashioned paper based ones). Things must be categorised if thoughts are to be shared efficiently, and if a thing can't bit easily clagged in a pre-existing slot, then there has to be a dustbin category.

Cup-and-ring-works? Nah. It wouldn't catch on. Fortunately.
