...ah! But as with so much in life, it's all a matter of timing! If - due to a run of warm summers - the water table didn't appear at a level in the ditch and the spoil etc. from the ditch sides started to accumulate in the bottom of the ditch, then perhaps there would be no witness marks or silt?

All these things I have written are theories: error-prone possibilities and pie-in-the-sky maybe's. I have no proof one way or the other, but my head is open to everything.....until something definite comes along.
