I think I worded this incorrectly - I was shown a private collection with 1,000 unrecorded finds - it was the unrecorded bit I was highlighting, not the fact that its private.

All the more reason why is should be recorded/reported.

Did the person showing you the flints make any mentioning of recording them?

Or why they had not bothered to do so?
