I see the point, but surely this should apply to archaeologists too. I know one or two who have their own private collections of 'souveniers' from digs. If you watch closely any tv program where an archaeologist is being interviewed, you will see artefacts in the background.

And what about the relics that we have in the BM etc, that were stolen from other countries during the Empire days....shouldn't they be returned (Elgin marbles) to the countries that want them back?

It is, after all, their heritage that was stolen.

I'm for people adhering to PAS, whether they are field walkers, archeologists or metal detector users. That other people act in such a disgraceful way ought to fire up those who love their heritage to ensure that the heritage they find is properly recorded.

Just out if interest, anyone able to give a ballpark number on archeologists nicking finds vs metal detector users nicking finds? I'm guessing the second figure is substantially higher, just because of the numbers of people involved.
