Waht is it with you soft city types...sit in your offices all day staring at a computer...devoid of any contact with lifeforms unless they email you...

Bullocks are just curious animals...yes, they will run at you if you turn your back on them but they will rarely get too close. Cattle again will nearly always back off if you go towards them...bulls can be different......there are laws about which breeds can be left in fields with footpaths in them...I take it these breeds are placid...but you never know. I must admit i am a bit wary of the ones with horns.

see my picture of Castle Dore...very friendly bunch...

The best story i have is about a phonecall i had a couple of years back from a gentleman up north who had tried to do one of my walks in my Bodmin Moor books. All had gone well until he got half way round...he then went to enter a field through which the route went. The field was full of young bullocks who immediatly ran after him.....

He phoned me to complain that i had not mentioned in my book that they were in the field...

Aye - cows don't bother me. And bullocks OFTEN don't - except if they start actually running towards me. That's what happened in the 2 fence jumping incidents - I just got on with me business til they got a bit too close, still travelling fast. Then I decided not to take the chance!

This was a good un tho - http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/17971 - I couldn't even get into the field - wherever I went along the edge, they just kept this formation & wouldn't budge....

As a self confessed soft city type, I will avoid fields with cows in. No shame, cos, well, I don't get ashamed anymore! :)

However, it does stop me going where I want and so, the million dollar question, how does one deal with a field of cows who are highly curious? The Withnail and I approach?

When we met some highland cattle on a single track road with ditches either side, near the reservoir above Glen Lyon, we had a hell of a job getting past because the buggers WOULD NOT MOVE. I have some experience of handling cattle, grew up in the countryside etc, but these were the most stubborn cows I have EVER come across. What made it worse was that they were so calm about it all! (plus there were about 30 sheep standing around going Baa Haa Haa Haa Haa at us)
