It's as near to a perfect hill as exists. Probably from a similar source as Catton, which is about ten miles to the west, maybe less.
Thom has surveyed Learable Hill in Scotland, I notice, and the row there has a same cross alignment built in. There are what-seem-to-be almost intact small barrows along with the rows, in Smithills. Excavation could unearth some interesting stuff or, knowing Bolton, not. It raises the spectre of the Neolithic King of Bolton though. He'd be 'just like Fred'.
