I believe that "finial" is the name for any pointy thing on a roof, even the merely decorative ones. Also, I think the ends on some curtain poles are called finials. Presumably it just means "the thing on the end" like the French word "fin".

that "fin" sound could be coming from the same root as "pin" (a more obviously pointed thing) - the letter "p" can often become an "f", over the years, and vice-versa (words like "phenomenon" show this connection very clearly)
