I pushed for "Prehistoric" too but was told it had bad vibes. Why? What have we got so far after nearly 200 posts? Still faffing around the name! Action group or talk shop? Sorry, I know I'm a grumpy old sod, but it don't bode well if we ever want to take speedy effective action to actually protect a threatened piece of prehistoric heritage.

"Hang on a minute Mr Gravel Stripper - we want to stop you but we don't know what to call ourselves."

Don't be such a miserable old sod, Earthstepper! :-)

It has to be done by concensus, consensus, conscenus (sp?) - bugger, can't spell!!!! We all have to agree and be happy with it - this is an autonomous collective, not a hierarchy. I firmly believe that once we have a name and strap that we all sign up to, (even if we don't necessarily agree with the nomenclature precisely) we can begin our quest to be archaeo-action heroes (and heroines) and begin the lobbying/letter-writing/campaigning in earnest.

But it would be easier to do this kind of decision-thing in, for example, a public house...

On a message board it takes a little longer.

That's true ES,

I'd reckon a Gordian knot-type solution is required. Yet I can't help but think that there needs to be some sort of reference that will differentiate a group that is specifically aiming to protect ancient remains, from other groups who may be aiming to protect more recent remains, industrial archaeology for instance.

Maybe somebody out there knows how to get a reliable vote going?
Answers on a postcard to the Red Lion in Avebury or something?

The spirit of Reg and his Judean pals is still about.

I've deliberately kept out of this (so far) because I've been down this road before - trying to think of a suitable name for a collective concerned with the conservation of ancient remains - and know how difficult it is to come up with a title that everyone can agree with.

In my experience, whatever is suggested, someone will have some objection.

I don't think that there is a snappy and short answer to this. Whatever name we do come up with, i believe that it should state exactly what we are about.

There are already two pagan-led initiatives, which are:

ASLaN - Ancient Sacred Landscapes Network (I don't like this one)

and

S.O.S.S. - Save Our Sacred Sites (Not bad, but it's got 'Sacred' in it)
