for the future

Is great, yet I personally feel these monuments to be living breathing 'things', Avebury for instance isn't just a relic, it's a part of our heritage, and shapes peoples lives today, so the 'past' is finished in many eyes, especially developers, my vote is we keep our heritage alive in the way we speak of it and conserver it. 'Preserve' sounds like something in aspic, whilst 'Protect' sounds actively beneficial. Words, words words!

"Late have I loved you, O Beauty, ever ancient, ever new"

"Historic places help us understand who we are as well as the meaning of our accomplishments and shortcomings." Similarly, the current President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Richard Moe, has recently stated that "what preservation is all about" is passing on the knowledge of "who we are, where we came from and what is the legacy that shapes and enriches us" (Moe 2001).
