Ritual Landscapes

Ah but could that be because it was originally a henge, so its original purpose had some bearing on how it was eventually used when the stones turned up? As at Avebury too - which is remarkably 'closed' when you think about it, with the high banks around it blocking the view, as Bucky says. Henges are surely about isolation from the outside?

Hmm. Goodness knows why Stonehenge is so different. Probly lots of factors, one of which might be the henge thang. Avebury fits, but then, the effect is still VERY different to say, Arbor Low or Thornboro.

Don't start that thread up again!!! (LOL!) I'm still not sure that applies to all - some henges seem pretty shallow for that, tho of course erosion may play a big part. (I'm thinking of, say, Broomend of Crichie.)
