Well, Graves says it was just a year! Never been sure about that one. I think he went on to say it then became a symboic death every year, except the 7th. And the it became totally symbolic. And then we forgot!

Taking your "death on the TV etc." thing. Holywood death does sterilise it enormously. Death is but a special effect today.

Since living in the US, I have come to appreciate the way that 'taboo' works on the human mind. The cable channels endlessly churn out movies featuring cold-blooded violence, unedited graphic depictions of heads exploding in blood (usually picturesquely over a white wall), only to edit out the TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE words, like 'fuck', or 'arse'. And replace them with 'Gosh' or 'Bottom'.

Also nipples and bottoms (mostly female) have been mosaic'd out. This is education US style.

Murder =Ok. Swearing = bad. Nipples = the worst.
