I heartily agree with everything you've said, TomBo, but then I am a devotee of Joseph Campbell, (see http://www.jcf.org/), as I suspect you are, who talks about the universality of the human spirit across the globe, irrespective of time and place.

Hi Jane. Glad you’re back. I was thinking of tempting you back with an offer to buy one of your pictures. Now you’ve saved me a fiver! ;)

Universality of the human spirit/imposed religion/self-dictated religion/no formal religion … I find myself convinced by everything everyone is saying here. The only way I can rationalize all these thoughts is to think that whatever the degree of organization their beliefs were subjected to they were the sort of natural, nature-related beliefs that each person would find self-evident for themselves and be constantly reinforced by their surroundings.

Wine into water takes a big bureaucracy to sustain, whereas water as a life-force is a much easier message to keep going.

I've never read Joseph Campbell, Jane, but that's the second time you've recommended him now so I shall definitely investigate. Thanks for the link.
