A couple of months ago Summer Garland and I stayed at the George & Pilgrims Hotel in Glastonbury. We loved the hotel, (beautiful architecture, groovy old windows, full english breakfast, Director’s beer and ghosts. What more do you want from a B&B?) . . we were also intrigued to find out how old it was, (it was founded in the early 15th century).
On page 211 of TMA, there is a Stukeley print of Glastonbury circa 1730’s. In the foreground is a very old gothic looking building. .
Is this the George & Pilgrims? I wonder if Stukeley stayed there?

Also, legend has it that there was once a stone circle atop the Tor, although there is said to be no proof of this at all. I wonder where the legend originated? Summer Garland is reading the ‘Mists Of Avalon’ at the moment, and says the stone circle is mentioned there also.

the mists of Avalon is a top book!
I have also heard of the stone circle but to be honest i think it is myth rather than fact. it could be based on that alot of churches were said to be built on 'pagan' sites, but i haven't heard of any definate truth, sometimes i think its just romantic fancy and others i think it would be a great 'truth'.
i think the Tor gives you whatever you want from it, its magical and mysterious all on its own, without adding any more 'stuff' to it. i can't see why they would have a stone circle on top of the Tor, but don't ask me why it just doesn't seem to 'fit' with many if not most other circles in the British Isles. (not that i know alot and now i am gonna get 5 thousand people saying .wwell what about THIS one! so i apologise now!)
Glastonbury is a lovely place, when you look past the new age stuff going on, but saying that it seems to quite like all that i get a f eeling it's always attracted that type of goings on and feels quite comfortable with it all.
oooh, i want to get down there now and re-read mists of Avalon!
(Is Summer into the whole Arthurian thing? She will be soon after reading that! Tintagel do a re-enactment of Mordred and Arthur' battle at Tintagel usually beginning of August which is quite good)

I had some dealings with a solisitor last year - who spent some time at glastonbury (before the festival) on Worthy farm when it was run as a B&B in the sixties.(apparently)

He was saying that if you stand on the top of The Tor you can see the 12 signs of the zodiac in the land around.

I dont know what he meant by that exactly but sounds like a magical place for a stone circle and besides it saved carry some of the blocks up hill when they built the Tor. Rings true in my mind.. sorry though - no proof here.
