Anyway...has anyone looked beneath the houses at Avebury for archaeology, postholes etc ?
Is there a chronology of housebuilding inside and outside the ring ? Did the village originate outside or inside ?
Any record of who had the bottle to build the first house inside ?
well I think you've busted the forum now ;)
Yes people have looked under Some of the houses.
The broken stone in the SW quadrant used to be under one of the old forges until Alexander Keiller knocked it down and found most of it and put it together again.
There is a cottage near the church that has a single stone as its kitchen floor. (allegedly - I haven't seen it yet...)
Chronology of buildings starts at the pub (where else?) which is not the Red Lion but the Catherine Wheel which is now gone and once stood over the road in what later became Norris' Farm yard.
The main coaching road from Marlborough to Devizes is now defunct and only remains as a track over the downs and the high st. The first houses were built along this route.
The present road now was created when the road was turnpiked (I can't remember the dated but VBB will probably correct me, I think it was a tuesday, after teatime)
The first bloke who had the bottle to build inside the circle was Freddye, or Cliffye, or Bobye.....
