Stranraer Museum (Museum, Stranraer)

Stranraer Museum tells the story of Galloway from 7000 BC when people started settling on the coast to the present day. There are stone and bronze axes from all over Galloway and Christian Stones dating from the 5th Century. There are also agricultural and industrial exhibits and a section dedicated to the noted Polar explorer Sir John Ross who was born in Galloway. 22nd June 2022ce

Isle of Barra Beach Hotel (Hotel, Castlebay)

On a small island like Barra there is limited accommodation so it's important to know that your hotel will be comfortable. Hence I have decided to nominate The Isle of Barra Beach Hotel as an excellent destination hotel. It is moderately expensive but the comfort of the room and the ambience of the hotel make it acceptable. The food was well prepared and the staff were attentive. The fabric of the hotel was modern and colourful.

The Isle of Barra Beach Hotel is blessed with a fabulous location on Halaman Bay giving it extensive sea views. It is perched on a golden sandy beach 1.5 miles NW of Castlebay.

Although my trip to Barra was in 2011, I checked Tripadvisor to see if the Isle of Barra Beach Hotel was maintaining its high standard. It was rated 4 stars and had glowing reviews so nothing had changed.

Ian's House (Holiday Cottage, Port Ellen)

Ian's House is an old fashioned, comfortable, semi-detatched house in a row of Distillery Cottages within Laphroaig Distillery grounds. It sleeps 5 & has 2 parking spaces. All modern facilities are available including WiFi.
It's 5 minutes from Port Ellen and all it's facilities.

Iain McLean was a Cooper and Warehouseman at Laphraoig Distillery for 50 years and the house has absorbed the spirit which makes Laphroaig unique.

I love to travel, especially to antiquarian sites. I'm working through the extensive Cornwall site list with an annual week holiday. Avebury is my favourite spiritual destination. Las Vegas is my favourite sinful destination.

I also enjoy hill climbing however as time passes the hills grow steeper. I have climbed around 30 munros, however, I've also climbed The Cobbler, Stac Pollaidh and Suilven so height is not the only criteria.

I used to play golf (9 handicap) and support Queen of the South however I gave up both bad habits. Horse racing was a more recent obsession. Epsom and Newmarket are my favourite racecourses. At the moment my current obsession is music gigs: Arcade Fire, Dinosaur Jr, Sparks, Jesus and Mary Chain and Belle & Sebastian, my favourite band.
