Bryn Gwyn (Stone Circle) — Folklore

An intersesting encounter with the Arch Druid of Anglesey reveled something of the folklaw of these stones. Until quite recent times these stones formed the only stone circle on Anglesey (his words), then the stone masons set to work! These two large stones which frame Snowdon, were reputedly cursed and they were left untouched! Well I'm not sure how he came across this piece of unrecorded history, but Francis Lynch (Prehistoric Anglesey) notes that in the Mid 1700's there were indeed 3 standing stones and the broken remains of a fourth. I also noticed the large stone set into the wall perhaps 30m from the site back towards the road.

Shop Farm (Standing Stone / Menhir) — Fieldnotes

Surfice to say that its owner was quick to point out that this was just a rubbing stone or cattle. He did say however that he had a similar stone some 4 fields away to the north-west. Yes this other stone is comparable in size and shape. It's always worth approaching the landowner for permission to visit the stones, as they often provide some insight into the history or folklaw of the stone, true they may suggest that it's just a rubbing stone, but usually you can see by the typical shape, east-west alignment, packing stones around the base, quartz crystals etc etc that these stone pre-dates any animal husbandry concerns! 06/09/06

Stanley Mill (Standing Stone / Menhir) — Fieldnotes

Just to confirm it is the white undressed stone standing some 10m north of the old windmill. Not sure what the standing stone next to the ruined building is, but it is typical of the Anglesey stones being broad and thin. If you are inclined to climb over the fence behind the building is a narrow track/green lane which leads to a field perhaps 30m away. At the end is another "standing stone" forming the gatepost. 6/9/06
