The Autumn equinox illumination of the rear chamber and the ‘equinox stone’ in particular, taken at sunrise on 20th September 2005.
Up to my old tricks again unfortunately... Yes its that time of year again when it gets dark early enough to avoid headless zombies out in the wild countryside. Taken approx 9.10pm 26th August 2005 using torch light inside and flash outside. I think I prefer this one to the next image, and besides my dog managed to creep in on this one unnoticed (bottom right corner).
A great place to spend an otherwise un-inspiring evening. Pleasantly statuesque, surprisingly imposing stones.
The two other stones aren’t as small as they appear here, this was taken with a very wide lens..
The outlier, after being charged by a herd of bulls I used the opportunity to get a looong zoom shot to squeeze all the stones together.
From the top of a tripod at the top of my arms...
Up until now this tomb seemed to be an Elvis impersonator, now it wants to join the Jackson Five.
Piled up stones and a fográ sign rudely butting in...
A wild field has grown up around the tomb since the other photo by Fourwinds, it looks much better in a golden field in late evening!
Artists impression of how the court tomb would have looked from the information board.
The three guys in the court are hilarious, either they are warming their hands off a nice turf fire inside or else they have realised the grizzly bear they have tied up inside has worked his way loose...
Standing directly beside a barn at the side of the road, this large stone is easy to spot as you pass through the village.
Just about sums it up: “Irish Planning Regulations” is an oxymoron! The whole area of Carrowmore is covered in masts, barns and houses.
Tomb 5, the grass has been cut around the monuments recently as there were little haystacks all over the place. God knows what the place looked like last week, there was quite an amount stacked up.
(if you look very carefully you can see my tripod with the flash on top sticking out of the grass to the right and below the tomb itself, only noticed after I posted this!)
The rain stopped all of a sudden, and out popped a rainbow and some sun, against a stormy sky. Magic.
This image sums up the weather all weekend, dark, grey and gloomy on one side, bright and summery on the other.
Sun framed in the gap between the door and the light box, sunset 2nd July 2005.
Summer sunset shining through the light box into the rear of the chamber, just before 10pm on the 2nd July 2005. Because the passage is so short Cairn G is not nearly as accurate as Newgrange or even Loughcrew Cairn T which have longer passages. This means a good sunset two or three weeks before or after the Summer Solstice will be quite similar to the main event.
It could almost be in the middle of nowhere..
“You there! Yeah you... Get me out of here and I’ll tell you what the spirals mean”
Ballybrack Dolmen and the obligatory Hi-Ace van (in white of course)
The massive outlier which has cross shaped channels carved into the top as well as some faint cup marks.
The drawing of the circle on the information board outside the circle.
A panorama showing the circle and the bank, this was a larger image that has been resized by the server...
