Avebury roughly from south – can just make out some Kennett Avenue stones in left foreground
Unfortunately the tallest stone is hidden in the shadows of the trees, to the right of the bus
Faint earthworks of Arbor Low II on left, Gib hill on right and Arbor Low at top
Dramatic views over the channel towards Orkney Mainland.
As I climbed back down from the Knowe of Ramsay, I spotted the entrance I’d missed on the way past/over the tomb – I expected it to be blocked, but happily I was quite wrong....
Approaching the tomb from the lane through the undergrowth.
Pic included despite muck on lens to show just how tiny the entrance is – the torch balanced on the stones on the right is about 6 inches long....
The passage from near ground level with the chamber beyond.
Far end of chamber – the stones at the end are surprisingly stable and I was able to stand on them to see the upper parts of the chamber (a little) better!
Standing on the raised area at the far end of the chamber, this shot is back along the chamber with the camera held high above my head. You can see the end of the passage at the bottom of the frame.
Tiny gap into the walled-off side chamber – looking more of a built-in shelf really!
The chamber has several ‘cross-bracing’ stones. This is the view straight up, from the floor!
Looking up into the roof of the cairn from standing – I’ve read it’s about 15ft, I’d guess at more like 20!!!
Circle’s overgrown patch looking east, downhill from plantation over A6 & towards M6 (vaguely visible in mid distance on right).
Dumped clearance stones and possible cairn-kerb/inner circle stones.
Large stone at west with remnants of possible cairn/inner circle stones in background, mixed with probable ‘clearance’ stones. M6 just visible on top right by trees in distance.
Diminutive (stump?) stone at NNWish. Hansons’ quarry building in background.
Stone at WSW with remnants of possible cairn/inner circle stones in background, mixed with probable ‘clearance’ stones.
Circle’s ‘giveawy ‘scrubby’ patch, approaching from east uphill from A6 towards plantation.
Stones at SE of ‘outer’ circle. Fallow (at the mo) field to north of circle and relationship to plantation should help working out where circle is if the uncultivated patch it stands in isn’t evident....
Stones roughly at SW of ‘outer’ circle, and just possibly, ‘inner’ circle, though it’s a bit close to the ‘outer’....
View from hillside across valley to the east of the circle (other side of M6!). Line of hedges on either side of A6 can be seen at bottom of pic. Dodgy camera shake on overzoomed digizoom, but I think it helps ‘place’ the circle...which is the slightly darker patch roughly in middle!
Stump of stone roughly at the south of the ‘outer’ circle.
Biggish stone on ‘outer’ circle, roughly at the SE I guess. Top (SE) corner of (currently) fallow field north of circle can be seen at top right of pic.
A large stone on the ‘outer’ circle. Roughly at the east I reckon.
One of the larger stones. Kinda NNE I think!
A smallish (or broken) remaining ‘outer’ stone. Roughly at the north from memory – that’s the Hanson’s quarry by Wilson Scar in the distance.
The sun-bathed circle from above looking westish – I couldnt’ve wished to be anywhere else!!! This is heaven to me.
Looking east across the circle to the hillside we approached from
Approaching from the hillside above (east), the circle stones are not too obvious... but the platform is!!!!
