This is the actual Hanging Stone – it is located about 50 metres to the South-East of the rocky outcrop upon which the modern writing “Hanging Stones” is carved – this large stone forms part of the wall.

This is the actual Hanging Stone – it is located about 50 metres to the South-East of the rocky outcrop upon which the modern writing “Hanging Stones” is carved – this large stone forms part of the wall. As Hampson noted in his book (1883) “a rude mark of a cross, that about 7 inches by 6 inches, appears at a very distant time to have been cut upon it” – probably by Christian missionaries in the seventh century “sanctifying” the old Pagan relic.
