This site lies on the clifftop, 300 metres due south of West Mains farm, and was the first one I visited during my ‘expedition’ to Prail Castle, farther north. Discovered in 1961, West Mains Of Ethie promontory fort was found to have been defended by triple banks and ditches across the base of the headland, broken by a centrally placed entrance which was approached by a causeway. There is an excellent aerial photograph of the promontory on the RCAHMS website.
There is more to read about excavations at West Mains of Ethie on the Canmore website.
