Ah, thanks. Shame about that though, especially for such a rare form of monument.
On the subject of access, I recently revisited Summerhouse Camp on the Glamorgan coast that we've both been to, it seems that the "owners" have decided to fence off most of the site with barbed wire, lots of "private - no right of way" signs, and are trying to pretend that the public car park (which was actually for the watch-house) and the road leading to it is "private". Talking to a fisherman I met who was coming up from the shore, he said it had happened that week and was very bemused by it.
Best way to counter that is to ignore it and have the map handy... have come across a number of those: Yarnbury, Membury etc. A 'private' road only relates to vehicles, doesn't it?
Yes, although not all private roads have public rights of way on foot over them. In the case of Summerhouse, it's not a private road though, and the OS map shows the parking area with a big P!
The coast path still allows access through the fort, but a large chunk of the rampart and interior is now inaccessible without fighting the wire and barriers of felled tree branches.
