West Kennett Long Barrow is currently closed for conservation work. The entrance is fenced off while a small team of what looked like three people work on the drainage and 1950s concrete skylight. I was over there earlier today and spoke to someone who said he was an archaeology-engineer. The work, being carried out with care and precision, has been jointly commissioned by NT and EH.
A very strong plastic webbing ‘road’ has been laid up to the barrow and a portacabin is up there behind the fencing.

Blimey they've taken their time getting around to this. The engineer that I met three years ago at Trethevy Quoit said they were due to commence that work within 6 months!
Yes, apparently a lot of delay in starting the work. I've seen photos people have taken from the top of the barrow and inside the barrow as late as Sunday evening. A very strong plastic webbing 'road' has been laid up to the barrow and a portacabin is up there behind the fencing. I'm guessing the work started on Monday of this week - they had a lovely day for it.
Have just heard West Kennett long barrow has now re-opened. Will go over there tomorrow to take a look at what has been done.

Yep, was there to watch the sunset last Sunday (20th). There's still fencing on the top but the chambers are open.
