Stone Circle

Fieldnotes

Visited in May'11...the disappointment of finding a house so close to these stones in such a remote, otherworldly situation almost made me not want to get out of the car on my arrival...made worse by the fact that when I knocked on the door to ask for access...the homeowner charged me e1.50 to gain said access...having driven for what seemed miles down a bockety oul lane into the back of beyond...I thought I may as well pay up...but this tainted my experience here...at the risk of sounding like an arse. This IS a lovely site...there's a gentleness to be felt throughout the craggy terrain...the stones lean in at crazy angles, providing shelter from the wind for the lambs recently born...I just hope some of my money went to appeasing the 'good people' (the true custodians of such sites!) for the sake of lady homeowner!! stonemad Posted by stonemad

Hate saying it but this 1.50€ thing seems to be a bit of a Kerry thing, stayed away from two large Motorcycle events this year because they raise prices when the events take place, same with Football championship matches in Killarney, everybody wants to make a killing, there is another large standing stone in west Cork or Kerry, not sure which but you are also charged to visit, and not forgetting Kenmare stone circle where a charge also applies.....cute heures down that way :-) but I love the area! bogman Posted by bogman

It does look very remote, is there no way to get at it without paying? bawn79 Posted by bawn79

The money grabbing homeowners house is just twenty yards from the stones, but if your desperate not to pay then I suppose you could park quite far away and then silently have a night visit, but then it will be so dark you wont be able to see owt, or take a torch but then risk getting caught.
Or lie in wait for them to go out shopping and then have a quick look round.

No not really

we went there today. Just parked up walked in through the gate and took photos. No one said a word or asked for money. Surely the fact that there is a signpost pointing you into the field gives the impression that it's just ok to do so. Hadn't even realised about the charge until I read the above just now ! Loch Gur stone circle is another. Went with a group of 15 or so, first stopping in the nearby pub, where someone there tipped off the 'owner' who was waiting for us next to the box asking for 2 euros for the upkeep of said circle when we arrived there. Had he not been there I daresay I would have put 2 euro in the box, but the fact that he had colluded with someone in the pub to inform him of our presence, meant I slipped in 20 cents instead. rockhopper Posted by rockhopper
