In his book The Stone Circles of Cumbria, John Waterhouse quotes the following reference to the destroyed circle. 'At Hall Foss are the remains of a Druidical Temple called "Standing Stones" consisting of eight massive rude columns, disposed in a circle 25 yards in diameter".
