"Mr Shearing said the new Stonehenge circle would be built with stones imported from different countries around the world, with each one matching a colour of the spectrum.

He said the entire structure will be polished and set into a floor of white quartz granite and surrounded by a white stone wall.

It is planned for the attraction to host events such as summer concerts and festivals as well as conferences and weddings.

Graham Gould, of Salisbury City Centre Management, described it as a "fantastic idea". "

Well it sounds effing ghastly to me. Stones from all over the world, very environmental I don't think. 'Matching colours of the spectrum' - don't think that woo woo idea was in the original Stonehenge. Nor was a white quartz floor and a wall round it. Oh right it's just for making money from. No actual connection to stonehenge at all, just the name to make it sound legit and get some publicity.

God am I really grumpy today (yes). But honestly. Why is it always about making a fast buck. Still, English Heritage will need ideas like this to make some money once they get all their funding removed.

I agree and I could think of a great many of our monuments that could do with a £50m cash injection. But like you said its all about the money and £50m is a small 'investment' when set against the what will be made from the unsuspecting (foreign?) tourists herded in its direction. Meanwhile I will be giving it a wide birth. scubi63 Posted by scubi63

"Private investment for the build is currently being sought, with organisers expecting the attraction to make back the outlay within 6-10 years of it opening."

In other words it will cost a fortune to get in.

"Project leader Colin Shearing said it will be an "homage" to the original Stonehenge."

In other words, let's hope this bullshit will fool people into coming.

"He said: "You can't really experience how it was when it was new because it's old, so a new one would give you an opportunity to experience what our ancestors experienced when they went to the original one.""

But you can experience how expensive it will be to get into the new one, just like the old one. However, I doubt if our ancestors had to pay through the nose.

"For tourism in Wiltshire, it will be a huge boost. The new Stonehenge will compliment the old one”"

As before; it will cost an arm and a leg to get in. To both that is.

"Mr Shearing said the new Stonehenge circle would be built with stones imported from different countries around the world, with each one matching a colour of the spectrum."

Mr. Shearing believes all that bollocks because he is paid to. I thought he said it would be like our ancestors experienced the old one. All colours of the spectrum? What a tosser.

"He said the entire structure will be polished and set into a floor of white quartz granite and surrounded by a white stone wall."

So, just like the original then? What a prat.

Dear Mr Shearing,
Please cross me off your list of people to send spam post and e-mails to.
p.s. You are a tosser of the highest order.
Best regards,
TE.

The idea of a ‘Circle of our Own’ was mooted on the now defunct Stones Mailing List donkeys’ years ago. The idea was to have stones brought from around the world and arranged in a circle (though not replicating any existing one - especially not Stonehenge!) and be a place where like-minded people could gather freely without the usual hassle associated with ancient sites.

Still think it’s a nice idea - if the will, land and funding is there.

Yes, but We the cynical (well maybe just me) only see this as a cheap 'Land's End' style theme park of Mr Blobby proportions designed to trap the unwary (tourists) and rid them of their hard-earned. Rather than a somewhere meaningful to sit, contemplate and admire. Mind you there are still a few of the real ones left that are off the beaten track and where only us stone-heads tend to go, that serve that very purpose and hopefully will remain so.

:o)
