My observations and research on the Popping Stone to date, including analysis of legends linking Sir Walter Scott with its naming.

As you will know if you’ve been following David Dimbleby’s ‘Picture of Britain’, the composer John Ireland found great inspiration in the landscape of Chanctonbury Ring and Harrow Hill: his ‘Legend’ was written whilst wandering here. In his final years he lived in a windmill overlooking the Ring.

Carved into the broken standing stone third clockwise from the north-west causeway entrance are some Norse ‘twig’ runes. Interesting reuse of the site or just ‘I was ere’ tourist graffiti? They haven’t been satisfactorily translated, so who knows.

The 1982 Department of the Environment Guide Book for Stoney Littleton, with many interesting facts, and including the excellent inscription unexcellently cemented to the tomb:

R. JOLIFFE, THE LORD OF THE HUNDRED; THE DESIGN OF THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE BEING PRESERVED, AS FAR AS POSSIBLE, WITH SCRUPULOUS – EXACTNESS.

The mighty Beckensall’s interpretation, presumably based on a rubbing of a stone in the area of Weetwood 8. Despite confusion regarding the exact location and number of carvings, efforts have been made to ameliorate the apparent ambiguities.

New Lyke Wake Club is a complete crossing of the North Yorkshire moors along their main east-west watershed between the Stone at grid reference 470994 and the Trig point at 971012, a distance of approximately 40 miles. Every person who completes a crossing of the Lyke Wake Walk on foot within a period of 24 hours and who reports it to the Club within 28 days, is eligible for membership. There is no membership fee. Female members are titled Witch and males are titled Dirger.

The panorama gives an impression of the hill (although the weather messed the scene up a bit). There is also a link to a panorama from a Swedish dolmen.

The similarity with Tholos tombs in Mycenae struck me: Round chamber with recesses (although Atreus Treasury has only one).
