This is a great walk and a very good circle to visit. It does really need an OS map (unless you happen to have a helpful beer monster) – even the road there is quite hard to find. We parked beside the farmhouse – very friendly farmer just moved in recently, said he’s seen about 3 people visit the stones in the last month. Heavy rainfall had washed away some of the initial path up the stream bed past Clitters. Following the wall for a bit, past skeletons of several cattle (Bodmin beast been busy recently) then up to the hilltop. Can’t see the circle from there, spent a bit of time searching on the hilltop amongst many large stones and almost getting lost. However, if you look from the summit over to the nearby Fox Tor (near the A30) the stones lie in the centre of that line – about 10 minutes walk from the summit. We passed herds of ponies which gave a slightly surreal feel to the walk – one could almost imagine unicorns. No-one else anywhere in sight, and the sense of isolation really adds to the atmosphere when you finally get there. The circle is small but perfect, with a central stone, beautifully proportioned. All stones are surrounded by their own “moat” of deep water, presumably from animals rubbing against them, which has its own charm and puts the stones further out of reach. An idyllic late Autumn day all round.
