Hi Drew, yes started at the track just west of the high point on the B976. The walk along side the River Gairn is very nice. We are staying overnight on the hill west of Loch Builg so didn't get that close to the maybe crannog.
I'm not too sure about it. Canmore has only a rough grid ref and Moray HER gives the grid ref of this island. Looking at the aerial photos, the island isn't that round and extends a lot under the water north and south which would be odd for a crannog? There's another much smaller island just north, wondering if they meant that one? Are all crannogs totally artificial or any formed/built from natural islands?
Hi Ben /Jenny:-) Crannogs are mainly artificial I think, but in the Hebrides I guess they can get confused with duns which took advantage, and why not, of small islands. When you look at the photograph there appears to be something leading to both islands / crannogs. I noticed the Canmore grid ref isn't in the loch, one way of hedging their bets.
Gonna need a (bigger) boat for that one.
Nice one, I've been planning to go there for ages, did you start from near Gairnshiel?
