Yeah - the whole 'tourist experience' is the antithesis of everything I seek... but can't see how else they could manage it, really? You really do have to try and see this.
I hear you Gladman, but like you say how else can they do it. I thought it was done very well considering. They kept folk moving so we didn't bump into many others. Just our small group and the stones, I liked that but such a short time!
Similar thing at Maes Howe upon Orkney... I actually pretended to be so overcome that the tour guide allowed me to sit in the corner after everyone else had been shepherded out. Did I say 'pretended?'
It is the catch22 question: how do you protect stuff like this with so many ignorant, dangerous loons around and yet maintain access?

Yes, it reminded me of Maes Howe, access wise. They weren't really built for bus tours!
