This is a very interesting illustration. I was under the impression that Devil's Den had been erroneously restored as a cromlech in the early 1920s - in fact it looks fairly close to how it looked in 1825 so perhaps the 'well-intentioned antiquary' who restored it didn't get it so wrong after all.
And that's a very interesting observation, June.
In fact, I was just assuming it is the Devil's Den, it doesn't say that. But then how many 'cromlechs' are or were there on the Marlborough Downs to confuse it with? So perhaps it is.
Perhapsyyou've made an observation that no-one else has thought of! Maybe everyone else sticks to the received wisdom that it was totally messed about with, without checking. Interesting stuff.
