Off up there for a week next month and having plotted loads of sites on my maps it seems it's going to be impossible to see them all. Definitely hopping over to Hoy to fulfill my Dwarfie stone dream and taking in the obvious show sites but what others are must see sites on the mainland?
I'll be on foot and using public transport and I dont mind a yomp off the beaten track.
Just so many sites it's all becoming a bit confusing!
Tia. :)

I'm probably not the best person to point you towards the lesser visited sites but just wanted to say how glad I am to hear you are finally going. Skara Brae is must of course; Maes Howe, the Stones of Stenness and the fabulous Ring of Brodgar are all on the main island. Can't help with buses but did see some when I was there back in 2009.
I'm off to County Antrim, N.I. meself. You have a great time x

Thanks mum. Going to do the obvious sites but deffo nipping over to Hoy. Hopefully get to the tomb of the eagles. Dunstan is up there on my list too. Just so much to see. :)

Bloody autocorrect. *Unstan.
