We can't turn back time but we can kick our collective addiction to speed and the personal desire to get everywhere in the shortest possible time.

.. Good luck indeed to future generations having to deal with global warming and diminishing sources of energy - let's not forget that the internet uses a massive amount of energy itself. .

"There is no getting around getting around" - wasn't that Julian Cope?

Our culture wouldn't be where it is with the mobility we have. I doubt future generations would want to be with out the benefits of that culture. Cars, the internet, drugs are neutral things - just open to abuse.

I see a much more positive picture - I see things getting better, people starting to behave more responsibly, roads being closed, more bike lanes, better conservation, more awareness - probably in a large part to the repeated protests and efforts of people like yourself - just takes a bit of time and often seems painfully slow!

Thank you for your positive slant on the subject - its a fairly circular discussion where no one wins but its good to count any progress happening albeit slowing. Yes, more and more people are taking to their bikes with national cycle trails criss-crossing the country. I'd like to think more people are opting for small fuel economical cars rather than those big beast 4 wheel drives - even Julian Cope could take that option. Hopefully in the future these smaller cars will have hybrid engines. For people who have never owned a car, like myself, they will always have to be town or city dwellers - going out to the places they love rather than living in them. Having said that, over the past three/four years having access to Friend's car I have had three holidays that previously would have been coach trips, including the big one, Callanish. Of course it was immensely more enjoyable to have such mobility (and I did have some credit in the carbon footprint bank). However, in the same period I also went to Wales and Cornwall by public transport and had a wonderful time working out bus routes and at times getting hopelessly lost.

I would just say to all the people who participated in this discussion and who cannot envisage less traffic filled roads - please stop going on about hiding the A303 from sight - a tunnel would have a massive impact on the Stonehenge environment and hey! if cars and lorries are so essential to our existence then they should be revered as they hurtle past Stonehenge, not hidden away. And could the same people stop moaning about wind turbines that can be seen from an ancient sites and solar panel parks that may catch our eye glinting in the sun as we drive past. The Piper must be paid.
