There is a new documentary about Megalithic Britain & Ireland available now on DVD. You can find out more at www.standingwithstones.com.

My name is Michael Bott and the above mentioned DVD is the work of myself and my good friend, Rupert Soskin. I hope you will forgive me posting what is blatantly a plug for our work - especially seeing as I have not contributed here in the past. However, I hope that those of you that get to see the film will find it stimulating enough to post feedback here which Rupert and I would be happy to respond to.

In brief: we both have a love for standing stones and all things megalithic. Eight years ago we agreed it would be a great idea if someone made a film about the standing stones of the British Isles that wasn't just about Stonehenge - and why shouldn't that someone be us? I am a film maker of some experience, Rupert has been a leader of expeditions to various ancient sites in the world (most extremely to the jungles of Columbia to visit the Kogi Indans) and we began to develop a proposal for a television series. To cut a long story short - that didn't happen - but about two and a half years ago we decided: Sod It! - we'd do it ourselves. We began filming in November 2006 and finished filming in March last year. The edit was complete in November and just now the first consignment of packaged DVDs has come back from manufacture. and are ready for sale.

Essentially, 'Standing with Stones' is Rupert's (he wrote and presents the film) personal journey from Ballowall Barrow in Cornwall, visiting over 100 sites through England, Wales, Ireland, The Isle of Man, and Scotland, finishing at The Tomb of the Eagles on South Ronaldsay, Orkney. It was a journey of a lifetime and we had the best time ever!

I could go on (and on!) but I'd just like to say how essential a contribution to the completion of the film that the Modern Antiquarian website, and by extension all those who contribute to it, has been. Out on the road, we'd constantly be seeking information to back up or refute the things we were observing or interpreting and having the book to hand and this resource online was invaluable. Thank you all. Thank you Julian Cope. We are not worthy!

P.S. There is to be a special premiere showing of the film at the Chipping Norton Theatre, Oxfordshire on 15th April, 2008 in aid of the Rollrights Trust. Rupert and I will be attending. Booking will begin on 3rd of March from the theatre box office. Ticket will be £10.00

Hi Michael
Already on order and I am looking forward to receiving my copy very soon.

:o)
Scubi

Thanks for the info Michael!

Just had a peep at the video clips - looks good!

I stumbled across the trailer on YouTube at the weekend, searching for Avebury druid video clips. I was impressed and it was good to see my local site Stoney Littleton being featured. I placed an order straight away and I've just received the despatch note. Looking forward to it.

Matthew

Order placed tonight. Anxiously awaiting delivery...

Looks fantastic - order just placed

For ages I have hoped that Julian would release the video version he did of the modern antiquarian

This looks like a worthy alternative ;-)

Just received it from my mate this morning and I am quite impressed.
It is very well presented and the postcards are fantastic.

Can’t wait to pop it into the DVD player this evening.

:o)

Scubi

Moth has just ordered ours :-)

Just taken a look at the promotional film clips on the website - very nice!
Congrats on your megalithic odyssey Michael and Rupert!
Can't wait to see the DVD now...

This looks bloody brilliant!

I always wished julian would do a series based on his megalithic book(s) after seeing the TMA one-off...

This looks to fill the gap perfectly!

Well done guys! Might have to add this to my wish-list... :o)

PS - still hoping Julian will do more TMA telly stuff!

Watched last night

Fantastic, from the quality of the packaging to the actual feature

Brings back some wonderful memories of palces visited, but more importantly given me some ideas for visits in the coming years

Surely it is time for Julian to release the TMA feature he did years ago

This green and pleasant land of ours has so much to offer!

Cheers

Dave

Is it me?
When I go to standingwithstones.com I just get a page with those words on and a logo......

Frustrated in Cornwall

Having spent hours carefully considering the various merits of the different parts of this country as well as Ireland, I had finally made up my mind where to go for my holiday this year....

And then I go and watch your bloody DVD from begining to end and now I am back to square one, I haven't got a bloody clue. I have been to nearly all the ones in the south and now I just want to go back and have another look.

The photography was brilliant, the theories thought provoking and Ruperts enthusiasm and moments of solist quite moving.

Well done.

Next time you guys try something like this take me with you... I'll be happy to carry your stuff, make the tea and clean the bus just to see these places ;o)

I have sent the website link to someone in the US I thought would find this interesting - and was going to pop it onto a forum - however I noticed that the US is not listed on the places you ship to

Is this just due to DVD regions, or is there some other reason not to ship to US.

I would have thought there was a sizable market there to show that we have more to offer here than Stonehenge

I know some people who are coming later this year and both couples have listed Stonehenge as one of thier must sees

In both cases I have said try to get special access & make sure you see some other sites nearby

Hi Rupert and Michael
Well, the DVD arrived today and me and Moth sat down immediately to watch it. Moth had already 'accidentally' watched it earlier in the day while I was at work...

It's truly superb. A labour of love.

Beautifully paced, beautifully photographed. Great music, Michael, and great graphics, too. We love the computer enhancements and the lovely maps....

Rupert, your comments and delivery style was friendly and honest, and the narrative was clear and you constructed a real story. So much so, I feel like you're a friend! (Corny, but true.)

So I just wanted to say THANK YOU for taking me on this journey. I sincerely hope that you make some cash enough to pay back what you have invested and better still, it gives you the chance to get a TV production company interested in something...

Can't wait to watch the outtakes and commentary now!

We were very VERY interested to hear your theory about the petrified tree pillar in the middle of Bryn Celli Ddu... It makes so much sense. I'd like to know more! What do other viewers think?

Lots of love

hi

Not seen the dvd (yet) but have always thought that it either was, or was supposed to represent a (living) tree. The way it just shines when you go in, and is so soothing to the touch, the fact that it doesn't have that "damp" feel that so may stones in tombs have. I've always been glad that when the Museum of Wales took the carved stone, that they left the tree stone.

Of course those are just my thoughts, but when they first excavated/broke in; "he crept forward on his hands and knees along the dreary vault, when lo! In a chamber at the further end a figure in white seemed to forbid his approach. The poor man had scarcely power sufficient to crawl backwards out of this den of spirits as he imagined".

Didn't work though, he still went back and pulled it down, to find a pile of bone lying near it.

Hi Rupert and Michael
Moth and I have so enjoyed watching Standing with Stones this week, I thought I'd blog about it on my own website and give you a bit of publicity. (I get a few readers, I think...)
http://www.janetomlinson.com/journal/index.php?id=409
I hope you don't mind.

I am particularly excited about the 'Yggdrasil' stone tree observation. What a saddo I am - I've been thinking about it all week! Not least - 'how did I not notice that when it's RIGHT THERE staring us in the face?' but then someone observed the same of Darwin's theory of evolution.

Hi Michael,

The dvd arrived yesterday, spent thursday night watching it, excellent work.

ta very much.

Mine arrived today, absolutely marvellous and I am so pleased that Stanton Drew gets a good mention, being the poor third sister to the other two down here. Pig-sticking amongst the timber circles? thought that was Avebury's role....

Excellent news - I've been looking forward to this since we bumped into you filming at Long Meg , must have been July, I remember casing you out to see if you were the types to object to our removal of tree litter/offerings...
Anyway Congrats on getting it out and its obviously marvellous seeing its going down so well on here. Im ordering a copy now in time for my megalith buddy's Birthday. and wondering when I can get to Bryn Celli Du.
Hope you sell loads, cover your costs and make enough to make part 2...and 3....and....
Best Wishes
cx

Rupert & Michael loved the film watched it with my 6 year old daughter looks like I now have one member of my family willing to go out to some sites with me.
Some stunning photography there Michael makes me wish I had more time to get out and see these places.

Digging up this old thread (knew there would be one on here somewhere!) to say I watched this this yesterday, after ages of "...meaning to get...". Fantastic!!!

My husband and I had a blast with the 'been there' and 'oh yeah, that’s on the list', as well as getting a much better picture of places we know little of in a way a book / website just can't show.

Rupert Soskin is hugely engaging as a presenter, and I really appreciated all the 'we'll never knows', so much more refreshing than those who only have half a clue but like to push hard their personal theories as fact.

I'm actually going to watch the whole thing back with a notebook / sketch pad as I had so many inspirational thoughts whilst watching for work - some big thoughts that occurred to me, for that I'm very grateful! :-D

I'd love more of the same in whatever form - DVD, series, etc - but I do realise the logistics and barriers to this :-S I shall cross my fingers...
