What a surprise!

After reading the latest posting for this site i had a look at my map and found it to be in Davidstow parish. "They" don't even like people using footpaths up there..there isn't one footpath sign in the whole parish. When you do work out where a footpath goes the chances are you will come across barbed wire, brambles, bogs or rampaging animals....

....but is it the unfriendlyest parish in the UK?

Mr H

and while on the subject...

I have noticed that many of the sites on the north side of Bodmin Moor have Hallworthy as the nearest town...

...has anyone ever stopped in Hallworthy?

a cattle market and a pub (not reccomended)...and perhaps a petrol station..

Could the Ed please tell us why it is mentioned as opposed to Camelford or Launceston...it's hardley a village, let alone a town.

Mr H

Ah ... a local site that's probably not even for local people. If the field is directly over the road from a farmhouse then it would a fair guess that you should ask there. Although it does seem as if this may be fruitless.

I'm always uncomfortable with people saying they own our heritage. Although they may own* the land surely the monument should be seen to belong to all - as long as people are sensible and well-mannered about visiting.

*I won't even start about the evils of land ownership itself :-)

Nice to know these things are open to negotiation!

And to think I nearly stopped by that way last month... I wonder if they would have towed Mikki away in the car?

I wouldn't say it is the most unfriendly Parish in the U.K. but you would have to go a long way to beat Mrs Alford who farms in the Merrivale area on Dartmoor. She has closed off Vixen Tor , with barbed wire , keeping the public away from a fine kist. She took the styles away from an area enclosed by a newtake wall which contains Prehistoric, Medieval and industrial archaeology, two tin mills, to keep the public out. This is all marked access land on O.S. maps. Around 10 years ago when the D.T.R.G was carrying out an excavation on a third mill, just outside her newtake, she put a very large bull inside the newtake to stop the public getting to the mill via this route on the open weekend being held there. This meant a long walk over the moor to visit the site. Fortunatly the farmer at Shillapark farm let the public through his farm , so they can't all be tared with the same brush.

I have just read through this and the responses. I agree that it is curious that Halworthy is listed rather than Camelford. However I can't agree that the Wilsy Down pub is unfreindly. In fact I have found te opposite to be true. But then that is for me and I can see others may disagree. As for Davidstowe Parish being unfreindly, never experienced it! Again, I have found the opposite to be true.
All this would be sad if it wasn't for the fact that the site at Hendraburnick may be nothing more than a natural feature! I will post the various material soon. But please, whilst we all have our own experiences which may colour our views lets not use these pages to slag off various peoples!
