Can anyone involved with the NT – pure joy? – shed light on this?

The Stonehenge Project http://www.thestonehengeproject.org/ seems to consist of EH, NT and various government agencies all dedicated to sorting it out, but very clearly advocating the short tunnel solution, and they all have their logos on there.

Yet the NT clearly disagrees and wants the Long Tunnel. As they said to the Inquiry, and they say on their website:

"The National Trust therefore welcomes the Government's decision to fund the construction of a bored tunnel to take the A303 under the site. Without it, the vision for Stonehenge could not be realised. However, it is the Trust's view that the proposed 2.1km tunnel could adversely affect the spirit of place, landscape, archaeological and nature conservation value of the World Heritage Site.
The Trust has therefore lodged objections to the scheme and will be presenting its case at the Public Inquiry into the proposals beginning in February 2004. We acknowledge that the scheme holds certain benefits but in our view, it doesn't do enough to minimise potential adverse affects or maximise the opportunity to enhance the site."

Strange position they're in. They must've started off in agreement, on the basis of a "tunnel" and then diverged on the question of how long it should be.
