The sackcloth is not part of the vandalism, it was used by conservators from Bristol University to cover the stones while the graffiti was removed.

Hi Littlestone,

Idiots.

We were up at Wayland's at the weekend (Saturday evening), and someone had chalked 'new age' symbolism over the portal stones and inside the chamber, along with the word 'TEST'. Having tried to get it off - we made a good stab at it, for what it's worth - it has hardened my attitude towards these pathetic, selfish, self-serving, arrogant tossers who seems to think that they have the right to plaster their pathetic individual existences across places of national import. Down here on Dartmoor, this mindless fraction seem to think that kists are good fireplaces, FFS.

If I see it, it's going.

Peace

'stupidity' indeed; but possibly 2000 years of cultural conditioning as well, the only antidote to which is education and reason. restoration does happen at Avebury - look at the Five Mile Chapel, for example, built *on top* of the South Inner Circle, and perpetuated by 1000's of pounds worth of restoration, quite recently: meanwhile, the majority of Neolithic Avebury looks like a beautiful set of gleaming white teeth, with 2/3rds knocked out (ouch), which may well have been the metaphorical intention, during the cultural vandalism which beset this site, from the Roman period, and then from the 14th century CE on: the destruction did not end in Stukeley's day, despite his 'name and shame' writings - the largest monolith, the Obelisk - central to any understanding of Avebury - disappeared in his day; and outlying features like his Old Chapel (apparently a megalithic long barrow) have similarly gone, without trace. i am tired of hearing about buried megaliths, which i can learn nothing from, because i cannot view them - i want to see my neolithic heritage, where it exists: why is this denied to us?
