Apologies because I know I'm going over old ground here but there's been some discussion on the Stones List recently for the evidence (or idea) of an original spiral path to the top of Silbury.

The idea of a spiral path has been discussed before but I wonder if anyone has any further comments? I'll set the ball rolling by saying that I've thought for some time that the summit of Silbury was designed to be flat and, if so, it would suggest that it was used for something.

If the top of Silbury was originally designed to be flat (and used for something) you'd need a path to get up and down and it's not unreasonable to assume it was a spiral path (because, if you try going straight up, it can be quite a muddy hands and feet job and not very dignified :-)

Wally at http://www.cairnpapple.com/misc/Silbury/Silbury.htm has created a 3D image of this possible clockwise path to the summit of Silbury if anyone's interested.

>>I've thought for some time that the summit of Silbury was designed to be flat and, if so, it would suggest that it was used for something.<<

If Paul Devereux is right and the top was to view the Glory ( possibly among a lot of other things), then yes, a path would make a lot of sense, spiral for ease of use, any particular reason why the path would be clockwise and not anticlockwise going up?

I'll look at the model when I've figured out how to, the message "This control contains an eDrawing2 file. The eDrawing ActiveX control cannot be used from a Netscape browser. Please use Microsoft Internet Explorer to view this model." really doesn't help as I'm using IE ....

IMHO there wasn't one.
I sent Wally some pics to help with his 3D model and altho it looks good the reality isn't there.
A spiral path would be much more evident at the bottom as the feet trampled the path over the years.
The only evidence of this spiral path is that you can walk from the top of Silbury and follow a path for 1 turn and a bit before it stops. Dave Field demonstrated this to a local TV crew a while back.
This Must be the spoil heap that Drax threw over the edge when excavating the bore tunnel in the 1770's
It is the only place for the spoil to be (now we know that its missing.)

As the old hill has been knocked about by the Saxons and the people who came before only further investigations (none intrusive hopefully) could tell us what the original angle/shape of the mound was.
The excavations at the top do appear to show that the top was flat because of the chalk-stone work that was found when trenches were dug in the 1960's and a few years ago,
But that does not mean that it was an observation point that had to be climbed (processionaly or otherwise.)

Hi Stoney, Merlin's Mount just down the road inspires me to say yes. The 3D model with it's seven spirals fits the bill perfectly too.
