In the wake of Saturday's Heritage Action demo, the EH website account of Silbury has today undergone yet another rewrite!
Nothing extensive, merely the insertion of replacement phrases here and there e.g. "current areas of concern" have become "causes for concern" and the collapses in the tunnels are no longer ""localised" but have become "small-scale".
Reassuringly, the hill as a whole is still fine!!
It might have been thought that this would be a good moment to answer the big questions – have there been any unannounced collapses and is there anyone willing to say there won't be others – but no, just the same silence that shouts louder every day. Clearly, they're the right questions and sooner or later the pressure will work.
One more apparently tiny amendment: the work will no longer be "medium to long term" but "in the longer term". Not an accidental amendment, because the new phrase has been recently introduced elsewhere. So it looks like the timetable may be being lengthened. Is the mess at the bottom to be left to settle, as was mooted to their Advisory Committee last September? Perhaps the metaphorical hole is getting deeper.
