On returning to London found our four year old had picked this stone up by Adam.

Is it an axe or spearhead or something?
If so, what is the protocol? Put it back / offer it to the museum?

So that's what they look like when they're started! It's called a core and is the early stage of one of those highly polished axeheads. Take it to the local Portable Antiquities Occifer and he'll know what to do next. (I'm assuming it'll be a he).

To be honest, it looks the wrong shape to be prehistoric. Though could be!

How large is it?

The best thing to do would be to take it to your local Finds Liaison Officer who will be able to advise. Or post it to the Keiller museum in Avebury, they'll do the right thing with it I'm sure :-)

What stone is it?

Curious! A rather lovely artefact but I am fairly certain it is not local to Avebury. Perhaps someone left it as an 'offering' - as I once left crystal in the long grass at the top of Waden Hill ... yes, I know better now.
