whilst looking around a few callanish websites i noticed this...... 'VISITOR NUMBERS ARE NOW SUCH THAT A PATH HAS BEEN LAID AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE SITE BY HISTORIC SCOTLAND TO LESSEN THE DAMAGE TO THE INTERIOR OF THE AVENUE AND CIRCLE' what does this mean? does it mean you are not allowed to go near the stones a la carnac and stonehenge? i'm hoping to go there in may ..... a hugely significant trip for me in many ways and i dread to think that it might not be possible to get anywhere near them..... do margaret and ron curtis still organise visits? even then it would be a serious bummer not to be able to have a solitary wander! hope this is not true! liss x

There is a path around them that you are not really supposed to venture off but we did couldn't control ourselves i'm afraid. I didn't feel that i was being disrespectful by doing this as on that day we were the only visitors. I can see the point if there was hundreds of people wandering at the same time which could cause damage but I don't believe a couple of folk once in a while can hurt.
I hope it is quiet when you go

We've just got back from lewis, and there is a path around the perimiter, but it does cut through the avenue. It was fairly quiet, but there were people walking up throught the avenue and into the circle. There are also lots of notices about Margeret curtis guided walks (for about £20 I think) You can also visit their own exhibition, its along side the road towards Breasclete on the right. We got to meet Ron Curtis when we went, also their books are cheaper than the visitors centre and you get alot more info
