Fool covers dolmen in tin-foil:

http://www.sligochampion.ie/front-page/anger-over-145punk-rock146-art-at-5000-years-old-dolmen-1050068.html

“The concept ‘Punk Rock’ is an art installation, covering a Neolithic object with foil to obscure the texture and highlight the form, challenges any antiquated references within the postmodern context, by an organo surrealist. Augmenting the rock with material discloses its intended function and reveals, the original idea juxtaposed to confront the audience with paradoxes arising from unlikely choices of material, or from allusions to discrepant periods in art history, or from cultural contradictions instigating flexibility of form. Unlike Titian, Vermeer and Witkin whose works attempt to imitate the perfect order of external existence mine is of an internal order of things.

“What is being done here is also scientific, the foil was acting as a densiometer to extrapolate data from the reflective light patterns and determine how the sunlight travels around the surface of the Labby during the solstice. By analyzing sequential still and video images I may determine if the Labby is in alignment with the solstices. However, I’ll not be able to glean the data I was hoping to collect. Ultimately, I would prefer to study the rock with sophisticated telemetric detecting devices to pinpoint hot spots, as well as using thermographic photography, heat detectors, even a rhizotron to sample gaseous exchange of the plants.

Solstice

“I figured it must have reflected light in the summer and absorbed the most light possible on the winter solstice possibly providing warmth to a fleeing couple”.

Moron. I think I've concieved of a new art form - confronting post-modernists with a boot up the hole.

I saw an article on it a while back, but the photo is better than I'd imagined!

Considering all the abuse some sites have recently been submitted to, that's pretty harmless imo!

A bit like reading an art college degree show brochure that. I shudder to think how he would have filled out the 'what do you do for a living?' forum thing! Maybe he should wrap himself up in the foil and see how things go at the solstice?

It could have been worse. He owns the land so will [assuming here] not tolerate littering, so will not be leaving traces of the foil anywhere. It's also removable, and will not do any damage at all [except maybe bake the stones slightly at Sun Mark III].

Okay, he's a loony, but at least he's a good 'un!

I have a bit more information on the situation here.

The old fella that owned the land died and his daughter and her husband returned from the USA to live in the cottage when they inherited it. They decorate it in all sorts of ways, but do not seem to have damaged it yet.

They very much believe that the land is theirs and theirs alone, and so is everything on it. Many people have been chased off the footpath that runs through the land and past the dolmen (the words 'with a shotgun' appeared in one account, but that's only hearsay.) A bull has been located along another footpath nearby.

Right of Way laws are not as strong in Ireland as they are in GB, so I'm not sure what can be done at the moment. I shall be getting the information together for the local TD soon and will pass it on.

How much more obfuscating bullshit do we have to endure in the name of art? I am always wary of any commentary which contains the word 'juxtapose'.

It is undoubtedly less bad the burning or a paint attack though. However it seems tastelessly disrespectful to me.

*sigh*
