Not really a news item as not sure there is anything 'new' in this article but it is an interesting read nevertheless.

New study of tribal societies reveals conflict is an alien concept

I read this whilst having my tea. I thought it was really interesting but made me a little sad. To think we could live in the less than one percent of time where humans have known war and all that entails. With advancement do we sometimes lose more than we gain?

It's unfortunately a selective study, plus they use a definition that pretty much guaranteed they would find what they were looking for. In most hunter gatherer attacks it is a war of attrition rather than open battles, individuals who stray into the territory of another band are often killed thus nearby bands are eroded over a longer period of time than the studies they examined would properly account for.

It's human nature to dispute, and with good reason. Us humans reached our dominant, dominating position on Earth because we are masters & mistresses of mimicry. We copy, and the most important thing humans have ever copied is the ability to learn through play. Most other life that teaches skills through play, abandon play when the necessary skills for survival have been learnt, but not us, and as a result we can learn anything. The most important and hugely significant thing that we learnt as a result is that there is truth and there is lie. Only humans (as far as I'm aware, tho' dolphins & elephants...?) can distinguish this, which is why we are the princes & princesses of liars. So we dispute what is the truth.

To assume it a given - in view of the fact that no religion, in my opinion, has come even remotely near to providing a credible alternative theory - that Darwinian/Wallacian natural selection (if that's the right term) is the reason we, and all the other organisms on this planet, exist in our current state, the selection of random genetic mutations by 'Mother Nature' is going to ensure there will always exist those displaying extremes of human behaviour..... the beautiful, 'do anything to help anyone' type, and your psychopathic and sociopathic scum such as Adolph Hitler and any serial killer you care to name. I'd rather not. The overwhelming majority will sit somewhere in between.... genetically adapted over the millennia to co-operate to varying degrees, evidenced by the fact that we actually managed to survive thus far and not be eliminated by the big beasties on the savannah back in Africa.

To my mind war will always be 'natural', since genetic behavoural extremes are, by definition, 'natural' and the majority will always need to protect themselves from the monsters. What I find much less certain is what humankind can do to improve co-operation across the globe generally. I reckon the destruction of imperialistic empires has helped, although struggling republics have proved ripe for exploitation by the monsters promising easy fixes which appear not to exist. Facism was destroyed, communism failed.... but both refuse to go away since democracy, in theory giving everyone a voice, leaves a large percentage unhappy whomever wins.

I reckon we just have to keep plugging away exposing the rubbish as and when and steadfastly refusing to give governments more power. Although history is a poor guide to what the future may hold, it's a pretty good bet that those possessing the more extreme genes will always look to take advantage. We need to stand in their way.

The Chalice And The Blade by Riane Eisler is a very interesting and thought provoking read abiut this whole subject:

The few people I know that have fought surprised me by admitting when pressed that they quite enjoyed the hormonal thrill of warfare. The marksmanship and all the dicing with death. They say its quite primal.

I'm afraid my chemistry ould just make me run.
